The Selah Series
The Covers
I came across turquoise water framed by an ancient Roman arch, surrounded by orange flowers. It was pretty. It was peaceful. It was Selah.
I imagined her feeling safe in her small village, secure behind the walled entrance, but she found herself in Jerusalem where nothing was calm and there was a stirring in everyone's hearts and minds as Jesus made Himself known. Her journey would begin and possibly end in the same place, however, she wouldn't remain the same. We can look back at the familiar and remember all it represents, but to grow, we need to press forward and follow Him.
The Watchman. They have played an important role throughout history. They watch. They represent strength and integrity. Simon was faithful. He understood his position in the small village he called home. His mother Selah served as a reminder to remain steadfast in the faith. Today, we are still called to be the "Watchman on the Wall" over our families, our homes, our places of worship, our cities and our country. Jesus told us to watch and pray. Simon is a reminder to be spiritually alert. I chose this image as Simon held his sword high reminding the enemy we have the Word of God.
Keep watching.
It seemed like I viewed more than a hundred images to represent the prodigal. Stone. He needed help. He needed the Lord. He was a mess. I thought about David; he took five smooth stones and slew the giant. Stone needed his own five stones to defeat the "giants" in his life. The cover was simple. I purposed for the letters in his name to represent how we can slowly fade from the Light when we are disobedient and rebel against the Lord. We enter into a dark period, however, the stones of Hope, Faith, Joy, Peace and Love can conquer any giants in your own life and like the prodigal, the Father is waiting for you to return to His embrace and to once again walk in His light.
A small fire burns on a deserted stretch of sand along the sea. Only one person enjoys its warmth and light. Scout built the fire. He did it on his own. He sat pouting that nothing had worked out as he planned or thought it would. Afterall, he was Scout; son of Stone, son of Simon, son of Selah. He had a heritage. He was proud. That was his first error. Nothing can come between you and God. This cover represents a pivotal time in Scout's life. Just him and God. When you finally exhale all the injustice and unfairness you think God has placed in your life and admit your pride in doing things yourself, He will speak in a still, small voice. I saw a dove taking flight from the flames of Scout's fire of defiance, allowing the Holy Spirit to minister to his deepest hurt. Only God. It's personal. Let the Holy Spirit's presence, as a flame of fire bring truth, peace and the personal relationship intended from the beginning.
Peace. The Series began with a woman and I wanted it to end with one. After all the struggles, uncertainties, doubt and questions, a final peace comes that only Jesus can bring. Pure and simple, like the Gospel. The dove represents peace so often in stories and illustrations and the movement of the image I chose spoke to me that the Holy Spirit is ever present in our times of trouble. Sofie rested in this Presence. The legacy of her family left her with assurance that God can be trusted. I'll leave it at that to not reveal her story and also humbly request you continue to pray for the Holy Spirit to comfort you with this same peace.
